Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore District is one of the 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh. Nellore is famous for its paddy fields, The population of the district was 2,966,082 of which 22.45% were urban as of 2011. Nellore city is its administrative headquarters. The major towns in the district are Kavali, Gudur, Venkatagiri, Sullurpeta, Atmakur, Naidupeta and Kovur. It is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east, Chittoor District to the southwest, YSR District to the west, Prakasam District to the north and the Rayalseema to the south. It was earlier known as Nellore district. In June 2008, the government of Andhra Pradesh officially renamed the district as Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore District after the freedom fighter and revolutionary Potti Sri Ramulu, who died fasting in an attempt to achieve the formation of a separate state for the Telugu people.[2] This new name is currently the longest administrative name at district entity level in India consisting of 24 characters (non including white spaces
